Why Is Construction Safety Training Important?

Pattern

We’ve all seen those road safety ads where someone is doing something unsafe like driving while reading a book, or trying to fix a full size couch into the boot of a hatchback.

Yes, they can be a little corny, or a little overdone, but we all understand the message: the road is not the place to take risks.

And neither is the construction site. We construction workers aren’t sitting behind the desk at offices, comfortably behind a screen; we’re doing things with our hands, using high-powered machinery and lifting heavy objects.

That’s why we chat with the safety team at Construction Training International and discuss why safety training in construction is so important.

Construction involves high-risk work

Construction work is some of the most rewarding yet challenging work out there. We’re blessed to be out in the sunshine all day, doing things with our hands, rather than being stuck behind an computer and replying to emails.

But with that benefit comes great responsibility: being extremely safe at all times. Construction work is high-risk work. We operate, on a daily basis, large-scale machinery such as cranes, articulated dump-trucks, earthmovers, forklifts and hoists. You can’t be too careful when operating large, powerful machines like these, which is why construction safety training is so important.

Working from heights

Constructions workers a bit ‘above’ the rest – and we mean that literally! Working from heights is another daily part of operations on the construction site. And, if you don’t mind being up high, it can be great work, with awesome views and a peaceful atmosphere… but it also comes with big safety responsibilities. Whether you’re scaffolding or operating a crane, working from heights requires extensive safety training to keep you and your workmates safe.

Protecting yourself and your workmates is the top priority

That brings us to our next point. Construction safety is so important because, if you make an error, you’re not just putting yourself at risk – you’re putting the entire team at risk, too. Dropping something from a scaffolding, for example, doesn’t cause much risk for you, but it does create extreme risk for your work mates below. Safety training in construction courses is there to help you keep your mates safe, as well as yourself.

Do your job with confidence

When we’re not sure about the right way of doing things, we’re less confident. And when we’re not confident, we’re more likely to make an error. Safety training is in place to make every worker feel absolutely confident that they’re doing their task properly and safely, minimising risk to themselves and the rest of their team.
