Boom-Type Elevating Work Platforms, also known as EWPs, are widely used on civil construction sites, making this course the ideal addition to a budding career in construction. The accredited TLILIC0005 course will teach you all the skills you need to operate the elevating work platform with a boom length of 11 meters or more.

What Is a Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform?

A boom-type elevating work platform is a device which raises and lowers a work platform for equipment, personnel and materials using a hinged, telescoping or articulated boom. These units are typically mobile, and they come in varying boom heights.

This government-backed course offers the necessary skills and training in order to successfully operate a boom-type elevating work platform according to Australian Model Work Health and Safety legislative and regulatory requirements.

Course Competency Criteria

With a variety of skills covered in this Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform Course, these are just some of the assessment criteria you will encounter:

  • You will learn to advise relevant colleagues regarding potential hazards in order to prevent collisions; assess ground conditions; assess environmental conditions, and use the appropriate methods to mitigate them.
  • Control and operating the boom-type elevating work platform smoothly and support the platform with the material, equipment and person on board.
  • Correct entry of the work platform, lowering and extending the work platform to the appropriate height.
  • Device safety checks on the anchor point, emergency retrieval system and energy absorber to identify defects and damage to ensure safe and smooth operation.
  • Clear communication techniques using hand signals, 2-way radios, signage and more to enforce workplace protocol and procedures.

Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform Course Requirements

The only prerequisite for this course is that the student needs to be 18 years or older.

Course Details

Here are a few details to note regarding the Boom-Type Elevating Work Platform Course:

Due to the practical requirements of this course, there is an in-person assessment. The practical demonstration component takes place on the purpose-built Construction Training International training ground in Riddells Creek, Victoria. This site has accommodation for those coming from far away. Some students may have access to their own site with the right equipment for their training. If the venue meets the requirements, we can send our qualified assessors and trainers to you to complete the course at your own site.

Should you choose to come to our training site, you can expect to see a full range of elevating work platforms, mobile cranes, forklifts, bobcats, excavators and more to meet all your training needs.

Each of or trainers and assessors hold a Certificate 1V in Training and Assessment, so you can expect the professional standard of training for which we have become renowned.

Along with the in-person assessment, this course has an online component in which the material is presented using video, audio, graphic and guided content through the learning portal. Successful completion of the online component requires the use of a computer with a modern internet browser and an ADSL 2 connection.

A Statement of Attainment will be issued by CTI upon successful completion of the course, and a High-Risk Work Licence will be issued by WorkSafe Victoria after lodging your Competent Notice of Assessment Online at a cost of $66.60.

This is a two-day course.

The cost of this course is $650.00 (GST Exempt). It can be completed as part of the RII30915 General Certificate III in Civil Construction course, in which case eligible students may be able to access a government subsidy. There is a total of seven core units and 18 Electives in the full RII30915 course.

If students are unable to complete the online component through the learning portal, the material can be sent via email, or it can be posted for an additional fee of $20.
